What fills your life?

With What Are You Filling Your Life?

Life moves fast. We juggle work, family, friendships, hobbies and even church activities. Yet Jesus asks a simple, soul-searching question:

“With what are you filling your life?”
— Luke 12:21 (TPT)

This isn’t about condemning success or possessions. Rather, it’s an invitation to examine our hearts—so we can live rich towards God and overflow His abundance wherever we go.

The Parable That Stops Us in Our Tracks

In Luke 12:16–21, Jesus tells of a rich man whose land produced a bumper crop. Naturally, he plans to build bigger barns, store more grain and then “eat, drink and be merry.” But God calls him a fool:

“This night your soul will be required of you…So is he who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich towards God.”

Here, “I,” “me” and “mine” appear eight times—showing how easily self can become our default focus. Yet “I” is only one letter in a vast alphabet. When our lives centre on self, we limit what God can do through us.

A handful of sprinkles - let God do the adding

Vulnerable Moments | Trouble and Triumph

Jesus warns that our hearts can drift in two seasons:

  1. Trouble – When crisis hits, we ask, “Where is God?” and our faith falters.
  2. Triumph – When everything goes well, we think, “Look at me!” and forget His goodness.

In both extremes, we fill our lives with anxiety or pride instead of with Jesus. To counter this, we must consciously choose to fill our hearts with God—through Scripture, prayer and community.

Key Scripture | Guard Your Heart

“Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.”
— Luke 12:15 (NKJV)

And in The Passion Translation:

“Be alert and guard your heart from greed and from always wishing for what you don’t have. For your life can never be measured by the amount of things that you possess.”

This is our call to vigilance. Rather than chasing more, we learn to steward what God has given us—using it to bless others and build His Kingdom.

Promise and condition

Rich Towards God | Examples from Scripture

  • Joseph (Genesis 41): Though he built barns in Egypt, Joseph stayed God-centred. His obedience during seven abundant years prepared Israel to survive a seven-year famine.
  • David (1 Chronicles 29:10–14): He praised God for all riches and honour, recognising that every good gift comes from the Lord.
  • Moses (Deuteronomy 8:18): He reminded Israel, “It is He who gives you power to get wealth,” so that we remember God’s covenant and purpose.

These heroes filled their lives with God’s perspective—and thus lived in supernatural abundance.

wealth is not evil

How to Fill Your Life with God

wITH WHAT ARE you filling your life?

Ps Larry gave us six practical steps to cultivate a heart rich towards Him:

Delight in Scripture

      • Read the Bible daily—even five minutes can reshape your day.
      • Memorise key verses like Luke 12:21 and Isaiah 1:19 (TPT):

“If you have a willing heart to let me help you…you will feast on the blessings of an abundant harvest.”

Pray with Purpose

      • Rather than duty-driven prayers, bring your hopes and fears to God—and listen.
      • Cultivate two-way conversation: speak your heart, then sit quietly for His reply.

Live Generously

      • Sow into God’s work by tithing, supporting our New Building Launch [see below], and especially helping the poor.
      • Generosity rewires your heart away from self-focus to Kingdom-focus.

Commit to the Great Commission

God wants your heart, be a disciple-maker

  • Follow Jesus’ mandate to make disciples (Matthew 28:19–20).
  • Share the hope you have and mentor someone in faith.

Pray for Israel

Pray for Israel

Our blessing links to the attitude of our heart toward God’s chosen nation. Join us in praying for the peace of Jerusalem.

Seek First His Kingdom

    • “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added…” (Matthew 6:33 NKJV)
    • Focus on His priorities; trust Him for provision and direction.

Watch, Read and Get Involved

Examine Your Heart | Today

It is a heart issue

Today, make the choice: Examine your heart and ask, “With what am I filling my life?” Then, take one step toward God—whether it’s reading His Word, serving a neighbour, or giving generously.

Let’s become a church that overflows with His abundance, shining His light into every corner of our community.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting us into Your abundance.

Forgive us for times we’ve filled our hearts with worry or self. Today, we choose to fill our lives with You—through Scripture, prayer, generosity and obedience.

Empower us by Your Spirit to live rich towards You and generous toward others. May our lives honour You, and may we see Your Kingdom flourish here at Rhema South Coast.

In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
